This policy covers the Powder Burn Noir app and this website. It is written to be read rather than skimmed past, so it is in plain words.
The short version: there is no account and no sign-in. The game does not track you, does not show ads, and does not sell anything about you to anyone. Some of what you say during a game is sent to a server so the suspects can answer, and that is the main thing worth understanding below.
The game is played by talking. While you are asking a question, the app listens through the microphone and converts what you said into text using Apple's speech recognition built into iOS.
Depending on your device and settings, Apple may perform that conversion on the phone itself or on Apple's servers. That step is Apple's, governed by Apple's privacy policy, and we have no access to the audio at any point. We do not record, store or transmit audio. The microphone is used only while a question is being asked, and what we receive is text.
The suspects' replies are generated at the time you ask, not written in advance. To do that, the text of your question and the context of the case in play are sent over an encrypted connection to our server, and from there to our AI provider, which returns the reply you hear.
This is the one place where something you said leaves your phone as part of normal play. It is what makes the suspects able to answer you rather than read from a script.
When a game finishes, the app sends a small set of numbers about how it went. This is how a one-person studio finds out whether the game is working without watching over your shoulder.
It is built specifically so it cannot carry anything you said or typed. It contains things like how long the session took, how many questions were used, whether the accusation was correct, and how the app performed. It does not contain names you entered, anything you spoke or typed, the suspects' replies, or any transcript.
It is not linked to you, to your device's advertising identifier, or to any account.
At the end of a game there is a short optional prompt. If you fill it in, what you write is sent to us — that is the point of it, and it is entirely up to you whether to answer.
That screen also offers to attach a log of the session, which contains much more detail about the game you just played, including things each player did that the other may not have seen. It is off unless you turn it on, the screen explains in plain words what it includes before you decide, and the game is unaffected either way.
The names you enter in Settings are stored on the device and are used only to tell you whose turn it is. They are not sent with the anonymous statistics. Game progress and settings likewise stay on the device, and are removed when you delete the app.
If you give us an email address on this site, we use it to send you a test invite and to tell you when the game is released. That is all it is for. It is not shared with anyone, and it is not sold.
We keep a record of when you signed up and what you agreed to at the time, so that we can show the address was given willingly. You can ask to be removed at any point, and any email we send you includes a way to unsubscribe.
Powder Burn Noir is intended for adults and older teenagers. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us something, write to us and we will delete it.
Wherever you live, you can ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Write to privacy@powderburngame.com and we will do it.
If you are in the UK, the EU or the EEA, the lawful bases we rely on are your consent (for the mailing list and for any session log you choose to attach) and our legitimate interest in making the game work and improving it (for generating suspect replies and for anonymous statistics). You may withdraw consent at any time, and you have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
If you are in California, we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA, and we do not discriminate against anyone for exercising their rights.
Traffic between the app, this site and our servers is encrypted in transit. No system is perfect, and this one is run by one person, so we deliberately hold as little as possible — which is the most honest security measure available to a studio this size.
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it, and anyone on the mailing list will be told.
